Learning Foundations and Skills
Language Development
Language is embedded into every aspect of our day. Children will learn new vocabulary and build upon their existing communication skills, through books, songs, educational tv programs and labeling the things we see and do. I have worked closely with Speech therapists and continue to consult with them to help guide our students in developing new language skills.
Sensory Activities
Exploring the world through our senses is a fun and exciting way for young children to learn! We target these skills daily through a variety of activities, including, obstacle courses, sand, finger-painting, shaving cream, and a variety of other activities designed to teach us about ourselves and how to regulate our bodies and emotions.
Fine Motor Skills
Kids use their fine motor skills in everything they do. From zippers and buttons to coloring and eventually writing. We target these important skills daily in the form of games, songs, toys, art projects, and other age-appropriate activities.
Play Skills
At Act I Daycare and Preschool, children have the opportunity to choose between a variety of toys and activities daily. Play is guided and supported by the teacher. It will be used to teach social skills, pre-academic concepts and self-help skills. Students can choose between a variety of physical, dramatic, sensory, and constructive play items. Through play, children will learn to communicate with each other, to share, take turns and problem solve.
Outdoor Play/Recess
We love to play outdoors! Students can play on the playground or under the covered awning. Climbing structures, sensory play, sand and water tables, as well as an outdoor stage, allow students to discover play and use their imagination in a different environment. All play is teacher facilitated to ensure the children are engaging in pro-social behaviors and building their ability to cooperate and play together.
Circle Time/Music and Movement
Circle time is filled with songs, books, chants and dances. We include basic preschool concepts everyday in our morning circle time routine. Singing loud and proud is encouraged!
Academic Skills
Our program follows the state adopted Preschool Learning Foundations as the guideline for our curriculum targets. The Learning Foundations focus on age-appropriate skills in all developmental domains including academics, social emotional learning, motor and independence skills. We have also adopted the Zoo Phonics Curriculum for our pre-literacy program. As is appropriate for this age group, lessons are designed to be colorful, fun, and engaging.
